Our Vows

Wedding Vows

Kristen & Kevin

August 7th, 2010

Hilton Papagayo, Costa Rica

We are gathered here today in the beautiful tropics of Costa Rica to unite Kevin and Kristen in marriage.  This celebration is but an outward sign of an inward union of heart, mind and spirit. Marriage is a commitment to life of the best that two people can find and bring out in each other. It offers opportunities for sharing and growth that no other human relationship can equal, a joining that is promised for a lifetime.

Because you will be safe in marriage, you can take risk; because you have been promised a future, you can take extraordinary chances. Because you know you are loved, you can step beyond your fears; because you have been chosen, you can transcend your insecurities. You can make mistakes, knowing the other will be there to catch you. And because mistakes and risks are the very essence of change, in marriage you will expand to your fullest capacity. Within the nurturing shelter of your marriage, you will continue to grow and develop, so you can discover your individual paths and offer your gifts back to each other and the world.  Having companionship on life's journey is the hallmark of marriage, and life's sweetest and most fundamental gift.

The contract of marriage is most solemn and is not to be entered into lightly, but thoughtfully and seriously with a deep realization of its obligations and responsibilities. No other human ties are more tender and no other vows more important than those you are about to pledge.  When two people pledge to love and care for each other in marriage, they create a sprit unique to themselves, which binds them closer than any spoken or written words.  Marriage is a promise, which takes a lifetime to fulfill.

With that said:

Kevin and Kristen, as an expression that your hearts are joined together in love, now join your hands and face me.

Kevin,  Do you offer yourself wholly and faithfully, and do you choose Kristen as the person with whom you will share your life, to honor her and encourage her, to promise to love her and always make her the priority in your life, from this day forward, until death do you part?

Kristen,  Do you offer yourself wholly and faithfully, and do you choose Kevin as the person with whom you will share your life, to honor him and encourage him, to promise to love him and always make him the priority in your life, from this day forward, until death do you part?

Kevin, please repeat after me:

Kristen, I love you, you are my best friend/ today I give myself to you in marriage/ I promise to encourage and inspire you/ to laugh with you, and to comfort you in times of sorrow and struggle/ I promise to love you in good times, and in bad/ when life seems easy and when it seems hard/ when our love is simple, and when it is an effort/ I promise to cherish you, and to always hold you in highest regard/ These things I give to you today, and all the days of our life.

Kristen, please repeat after me:

And now the rings.

Kevin, please place the ring on Kristen's finger and repeat after me:

Kristen, This ring I give you as a symbol of my friendship, love, and fidelity.  Because the only true gift is a portion of myself, I pledge with my heart to give you all that I am.  With this ring, I marry you and join my life to yours.  May our friendship, love, and fidelity continue to be everlasting and eternal.

Kevin and Kristen, may you always need one another, not so much to fill the emptiness but as to help each other know your fullness. May you want one another, but not out of lack. May you embrace one another, but not encircle one another. May you succeed in all important ways with each other, and not fail in the little graces. Look for things to praise, often say 'I love you' and take no notice of small faults. May you have happiness, and may you find it in making one another happy. May you have love, and may you find it in loving one another.

In as much as you have each pledged to the other your lifelong commitment, love and devotion, I now pronounce you husband and wife.

Kevin, you may now kiss your bride!  Congratulations!
